Some ancient structures were built on layered rocks. Their health after a long time, in spite of having the experience of many large historical earthquakes, shows efficiency of such layers in reducing the acceleration applied to the structure. Previous researches on frictional bases were mainly on just one sliding layer foundation in which the influence of vertical earthquake component was ignored or primitively investigated. The foundations with one or many sliding layers behave similarly, when the vertical earthquake acceleration is ignored, however they are quite different in real earthquakes.
In this research, behavior of single or multi sliding layer foundation is studied, regarding the influence of vertical component of earthquakes. The results show that this component is effective and cannot be ignored in the analyses. In order to concentrate on the behavior of such foundations and to reduce complication of the governing formula, it is assumed that the building on the foundation behaves as a rigid block, e.g. it can be a small masonry building. The research contains the influences of coefficient of friction and restitution factor of the layers as well. A code has been prepared by MATLAB for the analyses.<\/div>\n

The results show that the effect of earthquake vertical component is very important and cannot be ignored. In sliding layer foundations, specially with multi layers, the restitution factor is highly effective in reducing the acceleration applied to the structure, in earthquakes with great vertical component. It is worth noting that Iranian structures can be considered in the near field with great vertical acceleration, regarding abundance and diffusion of the faults. For other earthquake records, with low vertical PGAs, multilayer foundation is more effective than single layer base, however not as it was in near field earthquakes.<\/p>\n
