One of the highest priority problems of today’s seismology is modeling and predicting earthquake ground motions at a desired site. Two different approaches, empirical relationships and physical models, can be applied to evaluate strong ground-motion characteristics and attenuation relationships. The first methodology is a pure empirical approach. In this way, by gathering a large number of ground motion observations from different events and with different characteristics, it is possible to construct a mathematical model to describe those data using regression techniques. As it is obvious, the validity of this approach is basically dependent on the sufficiency of data. Therefore, empirical relationships have been developed and successfully implemented for regions where there are sufficient strong ground-motion data.
From the viewpoint of the number of seismic observation, the country of Iran is a rich source of data. Having a strong motion network with more than 1200 stations spread all over the country and locating in an active seismic region known as Iranian Plateau, enrich the catalog of strong motion observations of the country with more than 7500 records. The large number of observation in Iran seismic catalog has motivated different researchers to establish various attenuation relationships, each with a different functional form.
Such kinds of attenuation relationships are strongly depend on the global form of presumed functional, expert knowledge and less on the behavior of data in catalogue. In this report, a knowledge based and data oriented method; called Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) is implemented to establish an attenuation relationship which is completely according to the characteristics of the seismic catalogue. The result of such attenuation relationship is compared with other attenuation relationships proposed for Iran.<\/p>\n
