The second day of Sub-regional Project on Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis of UNESCO Tehran Cluster Countries (Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkmenistan) was held by IIEES on Dec. 1 in Niyavaran Cultural-Historical Complex in Tehran.<\/p>\n

Mr. Ismail Farzanegan, from Road, Housing & Urban Development Research Center<\/a>, and the director of the National Strong Motion Network was the first speaker was who delivered his speech about Seismic Network of Iran, stating that Iran has begun its activity about Strong Motion Network with the first Accelerometer in Hamadan in 1353. \u201cAbout 1100 active stations are working in Iran, covered by our center.\u201d He added.<\/p>\n

Next, Dr. Babak Mansouri, a faculty member of IIEES, delivered his lecture about seismic risk assessment and damage estimation of urban components. He noted that it is possible to make damage maps in 1 km x 1 km grids for urban parts such as buildings and lifelines in national scale<\/p>\n

The third lecture was presented by Dr. Shahriar Soleimani Azad from the Seismotectionic Group of Geological Survey of Iran. His speech was entitled \u201cMapping active faults and its importance in mitigating the effects of earthquakes among ECO countries\u201d. He emphasized more on the western part of ECO-SHARP project, namely Turkey, northwestern Iran and Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n

At the end, the draft of proposed methodology for operationalizing the project was presented by Ms. Sadeghi of UNESCO, opened up a discussion among the participants to draw a conclusion and to determine the path ahead. The meeting ended with the participates visiting the different parts of International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering such as the National Broadband Seismic Network of Iran<\/a> in IIEES, the Structural Engineering Laboratory, the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory, etc.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section>\n
