Brief History<\/div>\n

Iran, being located between two Arabian and Euro-Asian tectonic plates, has experienced several destructive earthquakes, claimed heavy causalities and serious damage in different periods of its history. The 20th<\/sup> century record of over 130 severe earthquakes indicates the seismicity and vulnerability of this country leaving socio-economic losses and long-lasting effects. Unfortunately, during some of these disastrous events, the invaluable evidences of ancient Persian culture have been destroyed. All the aforementioned facts confirm the crucial necessity on finding a solution to prevent and reduce these effects. Regarding the high seismicity of Iran as well as the vulnerability and high seismic risk of this region, the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) was established in November 1989 following the suggestion of 24th UNESCO General Conference and approval of Iranian government \u201cCouncil of Higher Education Development\u201d based on the investment of Iranian experts in earthquake engineering.<\/p>\n

In order to realize the IIEES goals and to develop the specialized knowledge in this field, training students are considered as a good asset to the institute. In this regard, IIEES was approved as a \u201cResearch Center\u201d at the 408th meeting of \u201cCouncil of Higher Education Development\u201d in 1999 and accordingly its new doctrine was affirmed in August 2001.<\/p>\n

Today IIEES is engaged in implementation of national and international projects and has taken effective steps in protecting the lives and properties of human beings in earthquakes with the guidance of all its responsible and qualified researchers.<\/p>\n

The main goals of IIEES are research and education in all aspects related to seismology, earthquake engineering, disaster risk management and suggesting practical approaches as well as supporting their implementation in order to reduce the risks of earthquakes, and to develop the safety culture against earthquakes in Iran and the region.<\/p>\n

IIEES is composed of different research departments, including Seismology, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Risk Management, Graduate Studies, Information Technology, and International Relations.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

IEES mission in seismology, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, disaster management, education, advertising, technology and consulting services includes:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Analytical, experimental, field and instrumental comprehensive studies and research focusing on better understanding of seismic sources (faults), Iran earth\u2019s crust, seismicity, earthquake risk, zonation, providing relevant maps and earthquake data catalogs;<\/li>\n
  • Establishing, development and improving Iranian National Seismic Network and other seismographic and accelerographic networks for foreseeing and better understanding of seismic activities in Iran and the region;<\/li>\n
  • Performing all aspects related to seismic and vibrating supervision and also Iranian National Data Center (NDC) related to the comprehensive contract of prohibiting nuclear tests;<\/li>\n
  • Analytical, experimental, field and instrumental comprehensive studies and researches in liquefaction, landslides, side effects, strong ground motions, soil and structure interactions, zonation and geotechnical microzonation, and preparing the relevant maps and other relevant issues,<\/li>\n
  • Theoretical studies and research for innovation and improving the analytical and designing methods of soil mechanics and foundation engineering focusing on dynamic loading in behavioral models, soil mechanics of multi phases porous media, earth-structures behavior and similar cases;<\/li>\n
  • Analytical, experimental, field and instrumental comprehensive studies and research in seismic safety of structures (buildings, lifelines, industrial and power plants structures, important structures such as dams, bridges, tanks, etc.);<\/li>\n
  • Developing seismic design methods and constructing new structures, retrofitting the structures against earthquakes and presenting relevant guidelines and codes;<\/li>\n
  • Developing the modern structural technology for semi-industrial construction of earthquake resistant buildings;<\/li>\n
  • Providing and upgrading the facilities of field laboratories, scaling devices and seismic isolators for IIEES research, and installing the necessary scaling instruments in important structures of the country;<\/li>\n
  • Constructing the experimental equipment and field scaling in the relevant research areas;<\/li>\n
  • Comprehensive analysis of earthquake hazard, risk and vulnerability of big cities, risk management, presenting the earthquake hazard reduction methods and supporting their implementation;<\/li>\n
  • Research, education and technological macro planning related to hazard reduction of the country and risk and hazard management (prevention, preparation and reconstructing) against earthquakes from engineering, economic, social and cultural aspects;<\/li>\n
  • Promoting the culture of safety, prevention and readiness against earthquake at all society levels;<\/li>\n
  • Holding educational courses, national and international exhibitions and workshops considering the country current standards and rules;<\/li>\n
  • Cooperating with industrial units, implementation organizations and engineering society through presenting consulting and technological services;<\/li>\n
