Korizan-Khaf Earthquake of 14 November 1979, Ms6.6

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=6.6 and mb=6 occurred in the Ghaenat region of Khorasan province in Iran on Non. 14, 1979, at 5:51:00 a.m. local time, (2:21:00 GMT). The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 33.92N and 59.74E. The event destroyed Korizan, Estand and Bahn-Abad villages, claiming about 420 lives. Most of the casualties were children, since most of the adults were outside at work (harvesting their Saffron fields). The Korizan-Khaf earthquake was associated with a rupture length of 20 km along the Quaternary faults with about 1 m vertical displacements. During the earthquake, 10 analog accelerographs started to work up to 182 km distance around the epicenter.
